Purpose of Music Video's/Codes and Conventions



Purpose

The purpose of music videos are so artist can be more promoted, viewers get it more imagery and artist  are able to populate the song a bit more. Most music video's have a storyline and are sometimes made to send out a message. Music video's are also a source to attract viewers and get attention from audience to get them more interested. Creating music video's can also make the viewers understand the song Nowadays majority of music video's are made and influenced on the youth.

Music video's use a difference sort of styles and techniques. Some music video's include:
  • Animation 
  • Narrative/non narrative
  • Live footage
Some music video's also have a mixture of different styles, some music video's include animation and even sometimes live footage. Mixing different styles in music video's can attract a lot of viewers.

Codes and Conventions

Rick Ross Ft. Drake, French Montanna - Stay Schemin (Hip Hop)



This music video is really popular and has a influence to our young generation of males, the music video includes expensive cars, branded clothes and also a lot of bling which attracts young males and makes them want to be the same way as they think its cool. Grime and hip hop music video's is a huge influence on the young generation. Music video's also allow an remembrance of the song. The different Shots of the video, as in the angle shots such as eye level shots, canted and high that were used which would be described as a typical hip hop music video's. Furthermore, there was a lot of zooming that was used and also panning, especially at the beginning of the video the camera was panning over the city which is Miami. Moving on, the video includes big expensive cars in the background known as a Maybach. Also the artist wearing long jewelery, Baggy jeans and also name branded clothing's including belts. These items were zoomed in in most of the shots. There are also shots of the Maybach cruising on the highway and shots of money. To continue on the editing stage, they created the video using a dark effect which goes with the theme of the song/lyrics to set the mood.


Kings Of Leon - Use Somebody (Rock)



This is a music video from the rock genre. This music video includes footage from concerts that the band has performed at which makes it more appealing. The angle shots that were used demonstrated the theme towards the song, especially shots of the crowd. Moving on to the editing process, the use of different effects such as black and white, sets the atmosphere of the music video genre. The music video itself is representing the bands famous lifestyle, with the shots of the crowds reaction towards the bands performance, the band entering the studio's etc. Many close up shots were used through out the video especially on certain members of the band as they sing.

Ke$ha - Tik Tok (Pop)




This is a pop genre music video which is mainly focus on the artist herself on having a good time, going out and getting drunk. the shots of this video represent the whole concept of the video. for example they used a lot of close ups to relate to the lyrics. For example: were the artist says 'before I leave brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack' there's a close up of the alcohol bottle then camera switching to the artist brushing her teeth. This is entertaining for the viewers and makes it more understandable towards the lyrics. there is many shots that a repeatedly used at the chorus. In the editing, a swirly sort of effect was used to show the audience the aspect of her being drunk. The lighting was bright to set that fun, happy morning mood, getting towards the end of the video, the lighting changes to dark, with a bleaching effect on the artist to show that its an partying atmosphere.
